Enhancement of Shock Absorption Using Hybrid SMA-MRF Damper by Complementary Operation

A hybrid damper concept is presented here using a combination of Magnetorheological (MR) Fluid (MRF) and Shape Memory Alloy (SMA)-based energy dissipation. demonstration performed utilizing the shear operating mode MRF one-way effect SMA. The damping performance different MRF-SMA configurations investigated corresponding consumption evaluated. We demonstrate that operation SMA dampers complement each other, compensating for other’s weaknesses. In particular, slow response from MR compensated by passive pseudoplastic martensite reorientation, which can dissipate significant amount shock at beginning occurrence. compensates incapability to dampen subsequent vibrations as long magnetic field applied. SMA-MR demonstrates superior compared individual dampers, allowing up five-fold reduction in alone thereby opening possibility reducing construction volume damper.
